 The Karl-Gerät had a caliber of 60 centimeters (24 inches), making it one of the largest artillery pieces in history.  It was designed as a siege mortar to destroy heavily fortified targets, such as bunkers and defensive fortifications. The intention was to use it for the siege of the Soviet fortresses on the Eastern Front. The Karl-Gerät was mounted on a chassis with tracks, making it a self-propelled artillery piece. The vehicle used a gasoline engine for mobility.
