Developed in the early 1940s, the M4 Sherman was designed to replace the M3 Lee/Grant series. It was intended to be more reliable, easier to manufacture, and more versatile than its predecessors. It also had several .30 and .50 caliber machine guns for defense against infantry and aircraft.
