In Ghostbusters, he’s the mascot for the fictional Stay-Puft Marshmallow brand, a playful nod to classic advertising mascots.  In the movie, the ancient god Gozer the Gozerian, an interdimensional being summoned to destroy humanity, takes on this form to manifest on Earth. The form was inadvertently chosen by Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), one of the Ghostbusters, who tried to think of something that could never hurt them. Ironically, Gozer becomes a gigantic, destructive version of the harmless mascot.
