The F-35A is the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant designed for the U.S. Air Force and other air forces around the world. It is designed to replace older fighter aircraft, including the F-16 and A-10, and is capable of a wide range of missions, from air superiority to ground attack. The F-35B is the short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) variant, designed for use by the U.S. Marine Corps, the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, and other military services. The F-35B can take off from shorter runways and land vertically, allowing for its use on amphibious assault ships and other platforms.  The F-35C is the carrier-based variant designed for the U.S. Navy.
