  The central structure in any Viking village would be the longhouse. These were large, communal buildings made of wood, stone, or turf, designed to accommodate multiple families. Longhouses had a central hearth for warmth and cooking, with benches along the walls for seating and sleeping areas. The roofs were often made of thatch or wooden shingles.  Viking villages were agricultural, with fields surrounding the settlement.
