In Ghostbusters, he’s the mascot for the fictional Stay-Puft Marshmallow brand, a playful nod to classic advertising mascots.  In the movie, the ancient god Gozer the Gozerian, an interdimensional being summoned to destroy humanity, takes on this form to manifest on Earth.
