Originally built as the Soviet Navy’s Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier named “Riga,” the partially completed carrier was purchased from Ukraine in 1998. It underwent extensive refitting and modernization efforts in China before being commissioned into the Chinese navy in 2012 as the Liaoning. The Liaoning has a displacement of around 58,500 tons and features a ski-jump ramp on its bow, which enables the launch of fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a mix of aircraft, including Shenyang J-15 fighters, helicopters, and other support aircraft. The carrier is also equipped with radar systems, anti-aircraft weapons, and other defensive measures.
