The Type 001A is based on China’s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was a refurbished ex-Soviet carrier. However, the Type 001A is a larger and more advanced vessel, with improvements in design and systems. The Type 001A has an overall length of approximately 1,033 feet (315 meters) and a displacement of around 70,000 to 80,000 tons. It features a ski-jump takeoff ramp at the bow, which is a characteristic design element of Chinese carriers. The Type 001A can carry a complement of fixed-wing aircraft, including various types of fighter jets, such as the J-15, which is a carrier-based version of the J-11 fighter. It also has facilities to accommodate helicopters for various roles, such as anti-submarine warfare and search and rescue operations.
